Case Study: Troll B
Location – Norway
Client – Envirent
Operator – Equinor
The Troll B project for Equinor in Norway utilised the C1-24 Chopsaw as a critical contingency cutting tool, supporting the potential recovery of a subsea structure.
The tool was mobilised for a 21-day window and made available in the event that weather conditions prevented full recovery operations. Although no live cuts were ultimately required, the C1-24 completed four test cuts, providing essential assurance and cut confidence throughout the campaign.
If required, the C1-24 would have been used to section the structure into smaller, liftable components. Its demonstrated performance—including a potential cut time of just six minutes on 457.2 mm structural members and the ability to produce clean cuts that facilitate water drainage—ensured a rapid, reliable, and operationally robust contingency solution for safe decommissioning.
Highlights
- Contingency Readiness: The C1-24 Chopsaw was mobilised as a contingency cutting tool, providing assurance for safe and effective structure removal operations.
- High-Speed Cutting Confidence: Testing demonstrated a six-minute cut time on 457.2 mm structural members, delivering high confidence that each cut could be completed efficiently.
- Clean Cuts and Drainage: The Chopsaw produces clean, controlled cuts that allow proper water drainage, preventing structures from taking water back on deck during recovery.
- Dynamic Design: The saw’s dynamic design enables cutting at multiple angles, offering maximum flexibility when dealing with unforeseen structural requirements.
- Blade Longevity: Proven capability of achieving 20+ cuts per blade, reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency.
