Case Study:
Stybarrow
Flowline
Location – Stybarrow Fields, Australia
Client – MMA
Operator – Woodside
Decom Engineering was engaged by MMA to deliver a critical subsea cutting operation as part of Woodside’s decommissioning activities in the Stybarrow fields, offshore Western Australia. The project required the precise cutting of a 4” flexible flowline at a water depth of 850 meters to enable safe recovery and inspection of the infrastructure.
The C1-24 chop saw fleet (units 102 and 108) was deployed via crane and powered subsea by an ROV, with Decom-supplied hotstabs supporting the operation. The goal: clean, efficient cuts to facilitate
NORMs (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) inspection and ensure the line was free of internal obstruction prior to recovery.
Solution
Decom Engineering deployed the C1-24 chop saw (units 102 and 108) to complete over 100 cuts on a 4” flexible flowline at 850 meters water depth. Powered subsea by ROV and supported with Decom-supplied hotstabs, the saw achieved an average cut time of just 3 minutes per cut.
The operation delivered clean, precision cuts—enabling immediate NORMs inspection and verification of no internal blockages without additional intervention. A rapid 10-minute cycle from cut to cut across 12-meter spacings ensured the client met critical project deadlines, while achieving the fastest clean cutting time available on the
market.
