Case Study:
Efficient
Koscon and
Mooring
Chain Cuts

Location – Indian Ocean

Client – Technip, Woodside

In September 2023, Decom Engineering was engaged by Technip for a comprehensive cutting operation in the Indian Ocean, targeting flexi risers, mooring chains, and Koscons.

The project was executed under challenging conditions, with water depths ranging from 500 to 850 meters, and it involved multiple mobilisations over an extended duration. The C1-24 105 Chop Saw was deployed, utilizing an AHC crane for initial positioning before being powered via a Work Class Remotely Operated Vehicle (WROV) for precise cutting.

Solution

The C1-24 105 Chop Saw was instrumental in achieving efficient cutting operations. Its advanced design allowed for quick cuts on challenging materials, significantly outperforming traditional methods. Notably, the project recorded over 2 cuts on the Koscons in just 40-50 minutes each, while other methods, such as DWS, managed only one cut in 90 minutes.

Mooring chain cuts were accomplished in just 10 minutes, compared to 40-60 minutes with a super grinder. One of the key challenges was cutting the Koscons at a 20-degree angle while safely releasing the cut side of the product to the seabed using our independent clamping system. The effective design of the C1-24 105 enabled safe and precise handling of this challenge, ensuring the integrity of the operation while adhering to safety protocols.
