Case Study: Agbami
Location – West Africa
Client – McDermott International
Operator – Chevron
The Agbami project, delivered in collaboration with McDermott International and Chevron in West Africa, involved highly complex and specialised subsea cutting requirements on a 16" flexible flowline.
The primary challenge was executing a precise cut at an unusual 45-degree angle directly behind an end fitting. This was successfully achieved by deploying the C1-24 Chopsaw via a 45-degree crane sling, allowing the required cutting angle to be maintained and enabling the subsequent lifting and laydown of the cut flowline.
The same blade also demonstrated exceptional versatility by successfully cutting materials typically challenging for other cutting technologies, including a large bend restrictor clamp with a 499 mm outside diameter. This performance highlights the system’s ability to handle demanding materials and complex cutting angles beyond standard applications.
Highlights
- Custom Link Retention System: Designed and implemented a bespoke retention system to securely capture severed chain links, eliminating the critical risk of dropped objects.
- Rapid Subsea Cutting: Delivered clean, precise cuts on 137 mm studless mooring chain, with the fastest cut completed in just 15 minutes.
- Optimised Equipment: Developed an easily manoeuvrable Chopsaw with integrated buoyancy, enabling efficient and controlled ROV operation.
- Jones Act Compliance: Met Jones Act vessel requirements by training and deploying local US personnel to safely operate Decom Engineering tooling.
