Case Study:
Pipe Cutting
CWC &
Pipeline
Location – Gulf of Thailand
Client – Claxton
In March 2023, Decom Engineering undertook a significant decommissioning project for Claxton/ Intermoor on behalf of Chevron in the Gulf of Thailand. This project involved the removal of 10” CWC and 16” pipelines located at depths of 60-70 meters. Utilising our advanced C1-24 Chopsaw, we implemented a deployment method that involved an AHC crane powered from topside, supported by a Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) and a reeler.
The project was executed efficiently over two scopes, each lasting three months, with a total of 300+ cuts achieved. Each cut was completed in 7-10 minutes, with blades successfully lasting for 20+ cuts. Cycle times for 24-meter cut spacings were consistently under 30 minutes, demonstrating the speed and effectiveness of our cutting technology.
Solution
A key challenge faced during this project was the condition of the seabed, which resulted in the pipelines being partially and fully buried within silty sediment.
To address this, the C1-24 Chopsaw was instrumental. Its design allowed for effective lifting and cutting of the buried pipelines, ensuring operational efficiency while maintaining safety standards. This capability not only facilitated the removal process but also minimized potential disruptions, reinforcing our commitment to delivering reliable decommissioning solutions in challenging environments.
