Case Study: Barrow Island

Location – Barrow Island, Australia

Client – Liberty Industrial

Operator – Chevron

Decom Engineering was engaged by Liberty Industrial to provide a cutting solution for Chevron’s decommissioning activities on Barrow Island. Operating in a highly sensitive environmental zone, the project required a cold cutting method to avoid heat, sparks, and contamination risks while dismantling onshore pipeline infrastructure.

The C1-12 chop saw (unit 102) was mounted on an excavator with radio control to allow safe, remote cutting of both 150mm OD GRE pipe and 40mm OD X65 steel pipe. The solution delivered clean, efficient cuts under strict environmental controls.

Solution

Decom Engineering’s C1-12 chop saw enabled fast, safe cold cutting of GRE and X65 steel pipes, delivering clean cuts without generating sparks or heat—critical for operations in Barrow Island’s environmentally sensitive setting.

The excavator-mounted, radio-controlled deployment allowed operators to maintain a safe distance while achieving precise cuts, minimizing the risk of contamination and meeting strict site safety requirements. The saw achieved average cut times of just 2 minutes per pipe, with excellent blade life across both materials, supporting an efficient year-long decommissioning campaign.
