Case Study:
Accelerator
Rod Cut
Location – North Sea
Client – Exceed / Deep Ocean
Decom Engineering was engaged by Exceed and DeepOcean to provide cutting services for a challenging offshore project in the North Sea. The task involved cutting through a hardened steel accelerator rod that had become embedded in an extremely hard seabed. The accelerator rod could not be dredged below the mudline, nor could it be pulled back out of the seabed, necessitating a precise cut at the seabed level.
The project posed unique challenges due to the rod’s thick and heavy wall, as well as its loose inner core, which complicated the cutting process. Other tooling had failed to make the cut, but Decom’s C1-24 Chop Saw 107 was brought in to provide a reliable solution, ensuring the cut could be made as close to the seabed as possible.
Solution
Decom Engineering deployed the C1-24 Chop Saw 107 for this operation, ensuring precise and efficient performance under challenging seabed conditions. The saw’s clamping system allowed it to securely position itself at the seabed, and the ROV-powered system provided the necessary control for the operation.
The C1-24 was able to complete the cut within the estimated time frame, taking approximately 1.5 hours to cut through the thick and heavy-walled rod. The tool’s flexibility allowed it to disconnect from the crane once positioned, enabling the saw to operate freely and perform the cut without issue. Despite the loose inner core of the rod, the chop saw was able to cut through with precision and confidence, overcoming a challenge that had defeated other tools.
